The controversy between certain Hindu groups and the producers of "Xena: Warrior Princess" flared in late February with the airing of "The Way," one of four episodes in the show's India-themed story arc. In "The Way," Xena battles the demon Indrajit with the help of Hanuman — the monkey god — and Lord Krishna. Problem is, many Hindu viewers got incensed — not because of the episode's bloodcurdling violence, but instead because they felt their God was being portrayed as a fictional character. In response to their protests, and the threat of a worldwide Hindu boycott, the show's producers agreed April 2 to pull "The Way" from the schedule. In late August, an edited version hit the airwaves amid continued protests. If Xena had known she'd soon be doing battle with such a large army, even she might have started quaking in her mahogany chamois boots.
